In spring, concentrate on crayfish patterns and baitfish patterns between one and four inches long. Look for the prevailing baitfish sizes, shapes, and colors. They might be anything from a five-inch gizzard shad in the south, to inch-long minnows in the north. In general, surface flies are not as effective at this time of year, although there can be exceptions.
