Trout hunt and cruise the shallow shoals of a lake. These areas, 20 feet
deep or less, provide ideal habitat for both trout and prey, due to aquatic
plant growth stimulated through photosynthesis. Stillwater trout have lots
of food to choose from. hatch-matching stillwater fly fishers can be kept
busy for many years. Some of the menu items stillwater trout have to choose
from include chironomids or midges, mayflies, caddis, damsel flies,
dragonflies, scuds, leeches, forage fish, snails, crayfish, water boatman
and backswimmers. Terrestrial insects, such as ants and grasshoppers can be
important at certain times of the season.
